Whether you and your baby love or dread baby bath time, it’s a regular part of your daily routine. But considering the percentage of accidents that occur around baby bath time, from accidental scalding, slip-and-fall injuries to accidental drowning, baby safety in the bathtub is something every parent needs to keep in the back of their mind at every bath.
Always remember when preparing a baby bath, to gather whatever you will need (face cloth, shampoo, soap, towel) and place it within hands reach, before your baby gets in the tub. Once your baby is in the tub, you’ll need to stay within arms reach of him at all times. During a baby bath you can’t leave your post to grab a towel, because your baby can drown in a very small amount of water in a very short period of time.
If you use a bath seat or a bath ring in your baby bath, keep in mind that this seat is only meant to help your baby sit up and is not intended as a safety device. Don’t rely on a bath ring in the baby bath to keep your baby in one spot.
During the baby bath watch out that your baby doesn’t reach for the faucets. A surprising number of babies are burned every year from scalding water which was suddenly turned on during a baby bath.
And when the baby bath is over be careful lifting your clean bundle of joy out of the tub-because he is slippery! Make sure you don’t have soap on your hands and also watch out for that spout. Getting scratched by the spout is a nasty way to end a relaxing baby bath. Baby safety in the bathtub should be practiced at every bath.
