Baby Feeding Safety Tips

There are a number of baby feeding safety tips to keep in mind as you get ready to feed your baby. You can keep your baby safe and protect her from germs by getting in the habit of following a smart baby feeding safety routine.

Remember to wash your hands before you start preparing your baby’s bottle. Sterilization and cleanliness is a huge part of baby feeding safety, so once your hands are washed, make sure everything from the bottles to the nipples and rings are clean and sterilized.

Consider baby feeding safety before using tap water to mix your baby’s formula. Boiling water for a one minute completely sterilizes it and gives you the peace of mind that there are no unwanted germs or parasites swimming around in your baby’s formula.

And remember baby feeding safety before using that microwave to warm up your baby’s bottle. A bottle that’s been warmed in the microwave might feel like the perfect temperature when you test it, but microwaves heat from the inside out, so the center of the bottle may be way too hot and could scald your baby’s mouth.  An important baby feeding safety tip is to take the time to heat the baby bottle in a pan of hot water on the stove.

Another important baby feeding safety tip is to make sure your baby is in a semi-upright position whenever she drinks her bottle. If she lies totally flat (like in her crib) then there’s a risk that she could choke. An additional baby feeding safety concern when babies drink bottles laying down is that the liquid from the bottle could leak and flow into her middle ear causing infection.
